Scam Alert: Avoid Being Scammed Renting a Dumpster Online

Scammers can build false online listings or mimic legitimate businesses on sites such as Facebook Marketplace. They frequently offer excessively low pricing to entice customers, only to disappear once payment is received, leaving you without the promised service.

Be wary of requests for advance payments, particularly through untraceable methods such as gift cards or wire transfers, before any service is given. Reputable businesses often allow secure payment methods via certified platforms.

DO NOT SEND MONEY THROUGH ZELLE UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY KNOW THEM!

ONCE YOU SEND MONEY THROUGH ZELLE YOU CANNOT GET IT BACK!

Understanding the Scam

• False Listings: Scammers set up fake ads, usually on popular platforms like Facebook Marketplace. They offer dumpster rentals that are much lower than other companies finding them very attractive.
• Booking and Payment: When a customer, thinking they’ve found a great deal, contacts the scammer, they’re asked to pay through an app such as Zelle. You will not get your money back! It is equivalent to sending cash.
• The “Broker”: The scammer then acts as a broker and books a dumpster from a real rental company. They request immediate delivery, often paying with stolen credit card details.
• Delivery and Deception: The dumpster is delivered as requested. The customer believes they have successfully paid for the service, while the rental company thinks they have a legitimate transaction.
• Chargeback: Trouble starts when the owner of the stolen credit card notices the fraudulent charge and reports it. The payment to the dumpster company gets reversed, leaving the company unpaid for the service they provided.
• The Aftermath: The customer is out the money paid to the scammer and is now liable for the cost of the dumpster rental.

A real dumpster company will never ask you to pay an unsecured way. Show Me Dumpsters has PCI compliance. PCI compliance refers to adhering to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), a set of security standards designed to ensure that companies that accept, process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.

Show Me Dumpsters provides a secure website, and we have been stopping orders placed by scammers. Unfortunately, the scammer already received money from the client.

To ensure your safety, always book dumpster rentals directly through the company's official website or authorized representatives. Avoid third-party listings or intermediaries that may be fronts for scams.
